The Last Samurai
I finally got a chance to see this movie (TiVo'd off of cable), and I have to say that this is absolutely one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Its very loosely based in reality - in RL the Samurai that Katsumoto represents was named Takamori Saigo, but the similarities are very rough.
Highly enjoyable if you haven't seen this, I recommend it.

Two other PnP games
Well since Champions has had a successful translation (in theme only) to the MMORPG realm and D&D isnt far off, I wish two other games would be translated. Deadlands is one and Shadowrun the other. Deadlands would be a great MMORPG to translate with its rich and developed background.

Yeah he did
With his clouded eye and saying the Benediction, that screamed badass. But then later when Campbell helped charge the fort and got an arrow in the shoulder, I went WHOAH! AND then, later on when he got his hand chopped off and it only ticked him off even more, I thought damn Im proud to be a Campbell. Of course what he did amounted to just F/X and acting, but he was scary .

Kuji was a tough guy, but
Kuji was a tough guy, but for my money the biggest bad-ass on this planet was William Wallace's uncle Argyle from Braveheart. He never fought at all, but something about that guy still scares the shit out of me!!

All about balance
Deadlands is by far my favorite set of mechanics. The overall system
and rules are good, but like any RPG, they have their good and bad points.
First bad point: Horribly underdeveloped melee system.
But, for arguments sake, you shouldn't bring a knife to a gunfight.
I'm sitting down and creating a game world based on ancient Japan, pre-bushido era. It's a melding of some of the feudal era and the pre-christianity/katana era. Time wise, it will be around the time of the second Korean invasion attempt.
Along with the backstory and environment, there will be an expanded melee system (balanced between complexity and efficiency), a tree style skill system, and some chi-based abilities to arrive later in the campaign.
It should be fun, and the melee system seems to be working well in playtesting.
I should complete the supplement in the next couple of months, and anyone is welcome to a PDF of it if they want to see it.

Deadlands?!?
WOOT!!
Deadlands is a great PnP game and is only topped out by Shadowrun and Champions. As soon as they came out with an expansion that allowed for specs on wpns such as the Katana and martial arts, I built a Ronin Samurai who wandered the West. Yeah I know I know, real original Maq, butI tried to make him a little original by using the Katana once wielded by Miyamoto Mushashi.

Agree completely
The movie didn't receive any critical acclaim, and I'm not a big
Cruise fan. This equals me not caring about the movie until I noticed
it in a friend's DVD collection.
After some raving on his part, I agreed to borrow it.
It now sits in my DVD collection.
It was good enough to inspire me to research the time period and adapt
the Deadlands PnP RPG system to allow me to run a feudal Japan game
with my long time geek-group.
Plus, Cruise's nemesis among the samuri (Kuji, I think...) is the
biggest bad-ass on the planet!

Very good flick
If ya get the DVD, one of the extras is the special the History channel did on the movie: Hollywood v. History which is a comparison of how well the movie actually adapted the events captured by the film.
Also, I enjoy tabletop miniature wargaming. Everything from historical to fantasy oriented. I mention this because Japanese Samurai armies are one of my fav units to play in such games. The scene from the movie of the charging Samurai cavalry emerging from the fog gave me goose bumps. It was awesome to see that.

I have never been very big
I have never been very big on Asian culture or history, but I do know a good movie when I see one. The Last Samurai was an extraordinary movie.
I really liked the feel that the movie gave early on to the Wild West shows that Tom Cruises character was recruited from. That in and of itself could make for a real interesting movie.
