Herodotus Frost is a professor of History, Ancient Languages, and Arcane Studies at Paragon City State University. He is considered one of the foremost authorities on magical artifacts and arcane writings. Circumstances beyond his control forced him to continue his superhero career under his real identity.
Herodotus is a member of one of the most notorious crime families in Paragon City. His mother Siobhan Birn married into the Frost family by marrying Frankie Frost’s younger brother Joseph. Joey Frost never bought into the family business they way the rest of his relatives did, instead going to college to study nuclear and genetic medicine. It was during his first semester of graduate school that he met a young exchange student from Ireland who he eventually married.
Shortly after both Siobhan and Joseph graduated from college they settled into their jobs, Joseph as a research scientist and Siobhan as cellist in the Paragon City Philharmonic. They were married only a short time when Herodotus was born.
From an early age, his parents could tell that Herodotus was exceptional. By the age of 3 he had a complete command of the English language and by the next year he could read and write at an advanced level. By the time he was 9 he was able to quote Shakespeare, solve high-level trigonometry problems, and spoke Italian. With an IQ that was off the charts, he achieved perfect scores on the ACT, and SAT when he was only 10. He had developed an appetite for devouring knowledge and seemed to try to find a missing part of himself as he read and learned more and more.
Herodotus quickly advanced through college during his teenage years. By the time most children were learning how to drive, Herodotus had earned Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics, Microbiology, History, Archeology, Geology, and English Literature while reading, writing, and speaking fluent Italian, French, Latin, Russian, Chinese, and Greek.
His graduate studies earned him master’s degrees in Botany, Chinese History, Chemistry, and Astronomy as well as PhDs in Theology, Ancient History, Ancient Languages, and Law. At 23 he accepted a position at PCS University and led the College of Arcane Studies in making many astonishing discoveries. It was during this time that he first learned how to unlock his magical abilities. His arcane awakening filled an empty yearning that he had tried to fill with his various degrees.
Keeping his true calling and new discovery to himself, he abruptly resigned as a professor at the age of 26 and began to develop his magical abilities. His studies and training led him to visit places of power and supernatural importance throughout the world. During one of his stops in an isolated ice temple in the Bentley Subglacial Trench he first encountered mystics from the Circle of Thorns. The mystics attacked him while he was deciphering runes that he found to be very similar to an ancient Celtic dialect from the late 8th century BCE. Although outnumbered, Herodotus was able to defeat his attackers and hold them captive while he finished his study. He then fled home.
Now 28 and arriving home he found that his mother was missing and his father had been killed by thieves who had broken into his parent’s house. The PCPD had very little information to go on, so Herodotus turned to his uncle Frankie for answers.
Frankie received his nephew warmly, too warmly for Herodotus’s comfort. He said that his father was killed for failing to give up a mystic gem that Herodotus sent him three months earlier. Frankie insisted Herodotus stay at the family estate for his protection while the PCPD searched for his parent’s attackers.
Not trusting his uncle, he began to use his magical abilities in secret to investigate what happened to his parents. Using a transchronal scrying device, he discovered that his parents attackers where Circle of Thorn raiders that came to kidnap his mother. Confused, he performed a rite to contact his father’s spirit. His father’s story forever altered his life path.
Joseph Frost told him that he was killed by his brother Frankie for refusing to turn over Siobhan to him. Siobhan was wanted by the Circle of Thorns and they were willing to trade powerful magical artifacts to Frankie for the safe capture and delivery of his mother. Frankie then ambushed the Circle minions and captured Siobhan for himself. When Joseph protested, Frankie ordered him killed.
His father’s spirit went on to reveal that Frankie had double-crossed the Circle to extort more artifacts out of them. When Herodotus asked why the Circle of Thorns were interested in his mother, his father gave him startling news.
Joseph explained that Siobhan was a distant descendant of an ancient nation of people called the “Mu and needed her soul for a grand spell they meant to cast for ends unknown to him. He explained that his mother’s ancestors were a race of magical people and their souls were being collected throughout the world by the Circle. Joseph told him this probably explains his latent magical prowess and would eventually put him in danger.
Seeking revenge he confronted his uncle. Frankie denied everything and told him he had been lied to, that a Frost would never harm another Frost. Seeing that Herodotus wasn’t accepting his answers, he ordered his guards to take him out back and give him a permanent “Dirt Nap.
Unleashing tremendous powers, Herodotus struck his uncle with a Thunderous Blast that sent him and his guards reeling. While using his powers to incapacitate the guards, Frankie came to and began to attack Herodotus. Without even realizing his actions, Herodotus caged Frankie in a tremendous field of electricity and proceeded to bludgeon him with his magical powers until he could feel death’s icy grip coming from him.
Herodotus demanded Frankie divulge the location of where his mother was being held and warned his uncle that he would come back for him and finish the job if he lied or withheld any information.
His uncle’s information led him to a cave at Gemini Park in Galaxy City. Escaping the heavy fire deadly arrows and magical balls of fire, he found his mother’s body suspended in the air surrounded by an errie green mist encircled by chanting spellcasters.
Working quickly, he dispatched the chanters and moved toward his mother when he found himself encased in a prison of earth and stone. Fighting against the crushing power of the evil mage, Herodotus had to rely on special artifacts he had brought with to keep himself alive. Eventually freeing himself from the earthen cage, he unleashed his own magical attack against his opponent. After nearly exhausting himself, he managed victory in a wild explosion of ice and sparks.
Turning his attention to his mother, he dispelled the energy supporting her floating body and examined her. His search showed that she had died, her soul ripped from her body and stored in a crystal. In anguish and pain he left the evil place of worship and returned home.
In vengeance, he swore to his uncle that he would fight to bring him and the rest of his family to justice so that no one else suffered like his parents had. Having overcome many opponents in the past, Frankie vowed to ruin his nephew’s life and destroy him.
While investigating his family’s illegal activities, he began to realize that he could help others as well as take down the evil empire of his relatives. He quickly registered as a hero, calling himself “Alsius Fulmin, which is Latin for Frosty Thunderbolt. As his powers developed and his influence grew, he began to make serious advances toward ending his uncle’s evil organization.
Having reestablished his old life again, he settled into a routine of teaching, fighting crime, and working to find a way to release his mother’s soul. Frankie however wasn’t fooled by his nephew’s secret life as a hero, and he set up an ambush to reveal Herodotus to the world.
Refusing to give in to the fear his uncle tried to instill, he embraced his new found celebrity and continued his superhero career. Using his public image, he has brought his battle with his uncle to the media while keeping from taking a monetary advantage. His classes at PCSU are always filled to capacity.
Within six months of his identity being made public, he met up with a younger group of heroes calling themselves the Avatars of Justice. He quickly joined them in their battle against the forces of evil and fights with all his power and knowledge for the citizens of Paragon City.
